In 2021, the Internet was loaded with comments that labeled Abigail Elphick as “Victoria’s Secret Karen.” The argument between two customers, Abigail Elphick and Ijeoma Ukenta, became intense after Ukenta posted a video of Elphick on the internet. Later, the police got involved and took the matter to court. Lately, the story has taken turns as the court filings revealed the medical history and psychological conditions of Elphick, adding complexities to the real story. Here is an update on the Victoria’s Secret Karen lawsuit.

Victoria’s Secret Karen Lawsuit Update

The argument sparked two years ago still has flames to it. The video posted by Ijeoma Ukenta, a black, in 2021 titled “Karen Goes Crazy” shows Elphick, a white, reaching for Ukenta’s phone, and as she starts to film her, Elphick breaks down and sinks to the ground covering her face and started crying. She denies the claims of Ukenta of hitting her. The video filmed Elphick begging, “Don’t record my mental breakdown—please, please, please.”

The argument started with a small quarrel when Ukenta asked Elphick to stand six feet from her and ended up in court. Currently, the legal filing revealed that “Elphick has a long history of medical and psychological conditions.” According to the New York Times, Elphick resided in a complex designated for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In an interview with the Times, her lawyer said that Elphick has a disorder. He said, “Her self-described “meltdown” resulted from the fear that Ukenta’s video could threaten her job and housing.”

Elphick’s attorney argued that Ukenta’s video violated Elphick’s privacy rights. In response to this, Ukenta’s lawyer asserted why Ukenta chose to post the video online, “keenly aware that if the police were called, she, a Black woman, may not be believed. It’s her right. She has a right to let the public know what happened to her.

Victoria’s Secret also condemned the incident in 2021 and posted a comment claiming to launch a full investigation of the incident. The post reads, “We certainly take this matter very seriously. We never want a single customer to feel uncomfortable or unwelcome at The Mall at Short Hills. We sincerely apologize to Ms. Ukenta for her experience.”

Final Takeaways:

The recent Victoria’s Secret Karen lawsuit update has claimed Elphick as a mentally unstable person with mental conditions and psychological issues. The courts also assert that the mental breakdown of Elphick during the incident is due to her mental condition and fear of losing her job and housing because of the filming. Meanwhile, Ukenta’s lawyer poses that Ukenta only posted the video online to reveal the truth to the world.
