The world of Wonder Woman has hit an unexpected snag. The third installment of the Gal Gadot-led superhero franchise has been officially shelved, leaving fans and actors in a state of shock and disbelief.

Chris Pine’s Reaction

Chris Pine, who played the dashing Steve Trevor in the first two Wonder Woman films, recently shared his thoughts on the cancellation in an interview with Business Insider. Pine couldn’t hide his surprise and disappointment over the decision, considering the franchise’s massive success and potential.

“I’m stunned that they said no to a billion-dollar franchise and decided to pivot elsewhere,” Pine remarked. “I don’t know what the reasoning was behind that; it’s above my pay grade, but Wonder Woman is an incredible character. Patty [Jenkins] is such a thoughtful director.”

Pine’s character, Steve Trevor, was a central figure in the films, but he acknowledged that a return for a third movie was not in the cards.

“Me? No. Homie is dead. Steve is gonzo. It would be ridiculous to try to bring me back,” he quipped, referring to his character’s dramatic exit in the first film and his brief return in the sequel.

Patty Jenkins’ Confirmation

Director Patty Jenkins, who brought us both Wonder Woman (2017) and Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), confirmed that a third film isn’t likely to happen. During an appearance on Max’s ‘Talking Pictures Podcast,’ Jenkins explained that Warner Bros. isn’t interested in another Wonder Woman movie right now.

“Yeah, for the time being, but probably easily forever,” Jenkins said. “They’re [Warner Bros.] not interested in doing any ‘Wonder Woman’ for the time being.”

Jenkins had been gearing up for the third installment, but plans changed when James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios and decided to shake things up with the superhero lineup. She expressed understanding of the challenges faced by Gunn and Safran in rebooting the DC universe.

“It’s not an easy task, what’s going on with DC,” Jenkins noted. “James Gunn and Peter Safran have to follow their own heart into their own plans. I don’t know what they’re planning on doing and why… I have sympathy for what a big job it is.”

What’s Next for Patty Jenkins?

With Wonder Woman 3 off the table, Jenkins has turned her attention back to another major project. In 2020, she was set to direct ‘Star Wars: Rogue Squadron,’ a highly anticipated film. She had to step away from the project to focus on Wonder Woman 3, but now she’s back on board with Lucasfilm and is currently writing the script.

“So, when I left Star Wars to do ‘Wonder Woman 3,’ and I started working on that, we talked about, ‘Well, maybe I’ll come back to ‘Star Wars’ after ‘Wonder Woman 3,’ so we started a deal for that to happen,” Jenkins explained. “When ‘Wonder Woman 3’ then went away, Lucasfilm and I were like, ‘Oh, we’ve got to finish this deal.’ We finished the deal right as the strike was beginning, so I now owe a draft of ‘Star Wars.’ So we will see what happens there. Who knows?”

DC’s New Direction

The cancellation of Wonder Woman 3 is a big shift for the DC cinematic universe. While the decision has left fans and actors like Chris Pine and director Patty Jenkins surprised and disappointed, it also opens new doors for everyone involved. Jenkins’ return to the Star Wars franchise is a silver lining for her and her fans. As for the future of Wonder Woman, we’ll just have to wait and see if the Amazonian warrior will make a comeback on the big screen.
